THE PROBLEM: SUBDOMAIN TAKEOVER ATTACKS

One of these attacks is what is referred to as Subdomain Takeover. In this attack, a malicious actor is capable of routing unsuspecting end users to their own resources. 

It is commonly done to disrupt and deface websites or steal user credentials and data from web applications. This can have significant impacts to an organization. 

Defacement and lack of service to websites causes massive brand credibility loss while stealing user credentials or information leads to data breaches. The impact is substantial, especially when compared to the low complexity of this attack.

Because cloud infrastructure is easily deleted and changed, this can happen accidentally in mere seconds. Once the attacker notices the vulnerability, it also only takes seconds to take control and serve up malicious websites or applications. This is compounded by the fact many efficient cloud-ready enterprises are using code or machines to make decisions about changing the infrastructure. Often times this happens with no visibility to the business owner until after it is too late. 

THE CURRENT SOLUTION

Currently organizations are attempting to prevent these attacks by running resource intensive and slow scans on infrastructure or simply paying "whitehat" hackers to expose these vulnerabilities before the malicious actors have the opportunity. These mitigations are not always effective, not predictable for IT budget strategy, nor do they protect the brand image as many "whitehat" findings are still made public.
