Use case

Multi-Party Trusted Customs Reporting for Processing Trade

Processing trade refers to the business activity of importing all or part of the raw and auxiliary materials, parts and components, accessories, and packaging materials from abroad in bond, and re-exporting the finished products after processing or assembly by enterprises within the country. Imported material/parts are either duty free or can qualify for tax credits.

Customs processing trade rules are well defined but strict; it is under heavy regulation because of tax fraud potential. When the parties involved, (supplier, logistics, manufacturer), have disconnected ERP systems, there is a prevalence of inefficiency though manual processes and compliance errors on applications, without the ability to audit or remediate effectively. Without verifiable traceability in document and process flows, there is little accountability, and the brand owner usually suffers financially for inevitable mistakes in the customs application.

Guardtime SCM connects parties though its decentralised platform which has a common trust anchor. Automated business processes can be configured which produce a verifiable and auditable provenance trail around the customs applications. Digitisation and automation is enabled which reduces errors with minimal impact on existing systems. All parties are able to benefit from trusted business process provenance records containing identities and accountability for actions, which may be verified independently by third parties such as customs if required.
